Coilover Air Spring Assembly Pneumatic Factory Service

The air suspension system on your vehicle enables you to raise or lower the ride height of your car for better ground clearance, off-road driving, and high-speed road handling.coilover air spring assembly pneumatic factory An electrically driven compressor pumps air into a flexible bellows made of textile-reinforced rubber and then raises the chassis from its axle. The air springs also help to isolate passengers or cargo from the shock of motion caused by irregularities in the road surface. Air springs are more effective than mechanical springs because they deflect much more in proportion to the load, whereas conventional steel springs deflect a relatively small amount with the same force.

The system is controlled by a computer that monitors each individual air spring for pressure and height.coilover air spring assembly pneumatic factory This information is transmitted to a control module, which then adjusts the air pressure or ride height for the specified settings. The control modules are installed on the car or truck’s frame in a special mount, similar to the one that houses a coilover-style damper. The air springs themselves are molded as part of the damper on some SAVs, but on other models—including BMW’s X-series SAVs—they are mounted separately.

Air Suspension

The most common air suspension is powered by an electric or engine-driven compressor that uses a flexible bellows made of textile-reinforced pliable rubber to lift the vehicle from its axle. The air-filled bellows also allow the driver to level the vehicle by raising or lowering it to accommodate changing loads, such as additional passengers or cargo. The system is called air suspension, or sometimes air ride, and it is a very common feature on commercial vehicles such as buses and trucks, as well as some passenger cars with built-in self-leveling and rising/lowering functions.

There are two basic types of air springs: bellows-style and sleeve-style. Bellows-style air springs have an internally molded bead with an end cap that is swaged to the bead, and they are more durable than the sleeve-style versions that use a pliable plastic or rubber sleeve with an externally crimped ring. The sleeve-style air springs are easier to make, but they offer less load carrying capacity and usable stroke than the bellows-style models.

Regardless of the style of air spring, it is critical that it is sealed tightly to prevent leaks and maintain proper pressure. In addition to a tight seal, a good air spring should be inspected for signs of moisture at regular intervals. In the case of air systems that use pressurized air, any moisture or debris left inside the system can wreak havoc on the seals and create an unsafe condition. To avoid moisture problems, air systems should have water traps to filter out debris and keep the system clean.
